Carstramon woods
Carstramon Wood is one of the largest semi-natural broadleaved woodlands in the area. The oak trees were once used for making charcoal and supplying the local mill with bobbins. Nowadays, the trees provide lush conditions for ferns and lichens and breathtaking bluebells in spring.

Big Water of Fleet Viaduct
A large granite viaduct near Portpatrick and standing at 36 feet high, Big Water of Fleet was once a railway that played an integral part in Scotland’s war effort during WWII. The viaduct was even featured in the seminal Hitchcock film ‘The 39 Steps’ (1935).

Anwoth Old Church
Anwoth Old Church is a ruined church building which was built in 1626 to serve the parish of Anwoth in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire in the administrative area of Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is roofless, but much of the walls remain, including the west gable which is surmounted by a bellcote.
The church and the old schoolhouse opposite were used as a shooting location for the 1973 horror film The Wicker Man.

Rutherford Monument
Fundraising began in 1838 to build a monument at Gatehouse of Fleet in memory of the Rev Samuel Rutherford, Minister in the parish of Anwoth from 1627 to 1639.
By 1842 sufficient funds had been raised by public subscription to erect a monument overlooking the town. The contractors were J and J Stewart of Gatehouse. As well as a memorial, the monument soon became an important beacon for shipping in the Solway. However, in 1847 the Rutherford Monument was destroyed by lightning. A local press report stated that it ‘lay shattered into fragments’. By 1851 funds were again in place to rebuild the monument and the work was carried out by Robert Hume, the Gatehouse builder responsible for the Ross and Ardnamurchan lighthouses.

Cally Wood
The oak, birch, sycamore and beech that make up the woodland of Cally are relatively young, but they already make a fine forest of peaceful beauty.
In early spring there are splendid drifts of snowdrops, which is why Cally is part of Scotland’s annual snowdrop festival. Later in the year you can find primroses and bluebells, and watch for red squirrels, buzzards and treecreepers.
The woods were once the grounds and open parkland of Cally House, now the Cally Palace Hotel. The grounds were laid out as a designed landscape in the mid 18th century by the local landowner, James Murray of Broughton. The old walled garden is now home to Cally Gardens, a nursery dedicated to interesting and unusual plants.
